Not everyone ‘gets’ touring cars. Take my aunt for example. She doesn’t even pretend to understand what it is about touring cars that has consumed my work and private life for six years. And I think I know why. She’s never been to see it live.

Watching the British Touring Car Championship on TV is fantastic when you know what you’re watching but motor racing is a soulful sport and I really think you have to hear it, feel it, smell it and see it, for it to get it’s teeth into you. I’ve introduced a lot of people to motor racing in my business and personal life and not once, having spent the day trackside for the first time has someone said, “it’s not really my thing”.
