YRC PitFit Day 2

YRC PitFit Day 2

How did you get on with your 122 squats today?! Keep going because it really will make a difference to your legs by the time it comes to the 1st April when the British Touring Car Championship begins at the traditional location for the start of the season, Brands Hatch in Kent.

The second challenge we have for you is a one- off and illustrates exactly what we mean by #PitFit. Perhaps we should have called it pit-ready or pit-prepared but it really doesn’t have the same ring to it!

Today’s challenge, should you choose to accept it is to find two hats.

You may already own these items or it might be time to start looking for new ones on the interweb.

Hat one should be a cold weather hat – a beanie is the fashion. There are three races in April and two in October this season – that’s half of the BTCC races in months that are renowned for being unpredictable weather-wise. If you’re an early riser when it comes to touring car weekends, you’ll know that even the sunniest of race days start with a nip in the air and this is the point of this hat. Find one and put it in a pile. This pile will grow so find a good spot for it in your home.

Sun shade/wet hat. This is a dual purpose hat and so its features must be considered over style. Sun is a welcome site on a BTCC weekend but it comes with perils. A typical race day involves at least 8 hours of being subjected to the elements and head gear is very important if you’re not to wake up on Monday morning looking like a lobster.

A peak is preferable to prevent excessive squinting and this doubles up as a shield from the rain (especially for glasses wearers). And it will rain. The laws of Murphy (which YRC lives by) dictate that following a reasonably dry season (2011) comes a monsoon/gale ridden season.

And here we have another point to consider. When partaking in entertainment activities in exposed locations, one must consider the wind. Will it remove your hat clean off your head? Will you catch it in time? Will you have to chase it in an embarrassing way whilst people look on, sympathetic to your plight? A runaway hat is no good. In high wind conditions a hood or beanie can be a better solution than the traditional motorsport merchandise cap that is the flavour at race circuits.

Hat hair

Yes, I can hear all you yelling…but what about hat hair?! Everyone knows the risks of donning a hat early doors. It’s a commitment to wearing a hat for the rest of the day because removing it will expose a nightmare of unkempt locks. It’s not a decision I can make for you but the upshot of being a racing fan is that hats are always suitable attire in our sport.

And finally…

If I have one tip for the race goer it is this. Leave your umbrella behind. There is no place for an umbrella at a race meeting unless:

a)       it is a big one, staked into the ground at low level in order to make sure you don’t obscure the view of others

b)      It has a seat function

PitFit Day 2. Done.
